A Vocabulary Strategy/Game

Create a set of vocabulary cards with words on only one
side; another with both the word and it's definition. There is no limit to the
number of players. The first player turns over a card and, if they can give the
correct definition (players must agree), the current player gets to turn over
another card, hoping for a match. If the cards do not match, both cards are
turned back over and the next player repeats the steps.

The second set of cards, with the word and definition, are
available to confirm whether the definition is correct. Both players must agree
that the definition is correct (even if the words given by the player do not
exactly match the ones on the card).

Players take turns until all cards have been matched. A
small reward can be given to the winner, or points awarded that can be saved for
future redemption.

TRY THIS ACTIVITY FOR TEACHING ESSAY PROOFING

Share with students the grading system used by
the educators scoring the essay on the SAT.

Make sure students understand the scoring rubric.

Share with them essays reflecting the different
scores.

Discuss what elements in the essay reflect the score it
was given-sentence structure,vocabulary,and introduction.

When they have gone over teh various components - have
them write an essay.

Students use the rubric to score their own papers.

Discuss with students the scores they have their
papers.

Rewrite the papers making the necessary changes.
